The documents below have been produced to provide the evidence base that supports the Proposed Submission Draft Joint Minerals Local Plan. The Sustainability Appraisal and Mineral Site Selection evidence are available on other pages.
Background document
This document explains how the vision, strategic objectives and strategic minerals supply policies were derived.
Background papers
Two versions of the background papers were produced and published in 2014.
Version 1, published in June for engagement purposes, identified baseline data to inform discussions with the community and key stakeholders. They enabled us to work with stakeholders to check information so that our knowledge and understanding of minerals issues was up to date and robust. They also identified potential issues, problems or concerns relating to the production of minerals in West Sussex.
Version 2 papers were published in December following further engagement.
Version 2 - December 2014
Background papers 1, 2, 4, 5 were updated, taking into account comments received during engagement with stakeholders on Version 1.

Silica Sand Study (2016)
This Study provides information about the geology of the sands within the ‘Folkestone Formation’ and indicates that most, if not all, of the sands within the study area are capable of being defined as silica sand (it has a silica content of more than 95%). This is significant because silica sand is nationally important and has different industrial and recreational uses.
South Downs National Park Soft Sand Study
The Study determined soft sand reserves and their use and demand within the South Downs National Park and the south east of England.
Strategic Stone Study
This Study identifies the most important building stones used in the county, and the location of quarries that produced the stones. The Study was led by Historic England, working with the British Geological Survey, South Downs National Park Authority, local geologists and historic buildings experts.

Wharves and Railheads Study
The 2008 Study was produced to provide background information on wharves and railheads in West Sussex. The aim of the report was to inform the development of policies for safeguarding wharves and railheads in the county. In 2013, an updated study was produced to provide evidence which has been used to help develop the proposed policies for wharf and railhead safeguarding in the draft Plan.
