What if I join and change my mind?

If you join the FPS 2015 you can choose to opt out at any time.

If you join the Firefighters' Pension Scheme 2015 (FPS 2015) you can choose to opt out at any time by completing an opt-out notice and sending it to your payroll department.

Your decision to opt out is effective from the date your notice is received by your payroll department and your pensionable service in the scheme will normally end on the first day of the following pay period.

If you opt out within three months of joining the FPS 2015 and have not transferred other pension benefits into the scheme you will be treated as never having joined the scheme. Your pension contributions will be refunded to you in the next available payroll.

If you opt out after having been a member of the FPS 2015 for three or more months or have transferred benefits other pension benefits into the scheme you will become entitled to:

  • keep your pension benefits in the FPS 2015; or
  • transfer them to another pension arrangement.
