How do I join?

Find out how to become a member of the RFMPS 2006.

You will automatically join the Retained Firefighters’ Modified Pension Scheme 2006 (RFMPS 2006) if you transfer from another fire and rescue authority and you were a member of the RFMPS 2006 in that employment. Although you will automatically join the RFMPS 2006 you will have the right to opt out of the scheme at any time.

If you are currently a firefighter with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Authority and are not an active member of a Pension Scheme and would like to join you will only be entitled to join the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme 2015 (FPS 2015). Please contact the Pensions Team for more information.

If you join and change your mind

If you join the RFMPS 2006 you can choose to opt out at any time by completing an opt-out form and sending it to your payroll department.

Your decision to opt out is effective from the date your notice is received by your payroll department and your pensionable service in the scheme will normally end on the first day of the following pay period.

If you opt out within one month of re-joining the RFMPS 2006 following a transfer of employment from another English fire and rescue authority and have not transferred other pension benefits into the scheme, you will be treated as never having re-joined the scheme. If any pension contributions have been deducted from your pay, they will be refunded through payroll.

If you opt out within three months of joining the RFMPS 2006 following a transfer of employment from another public service pension scheme (PSPI) and have not transferred other pension benefits into the scheme, you will be treated as never having joined the scheme and any pension contributions that have been deducted from your pay will be refunded through payroll.

If you leave your employment as a firefighter or opt out more than one month after re-joining the scheme, you will become entitled to keep your pension benefits in the RFMPS 2006 or to transfer them to another pension arrangement.

Please be aware that neither the scheme manager and/or Capita can provide advice as to whether it is in your best interest to be in the scheme and would highly recommend that you seek financial advice.
