How do I join?

Transferring your FPS 1992 from another fire and rescue authority.

You will automatically join the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme 1992 (FPS 1992) if you transfer from another fire and rescue authority and you were a member of the FPS 1992 in that employment. Although you will automatically join the FPS 1992 you will have the right to opt out of the scheme at any time.

If you are currently a firefighter with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Authority and are not an active member of the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme and would like to join you will only be entitled to join the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme 2015. Please contact the Pensions team for more information.

What if I join and change my mind?

If you join the Firefighters' Pension Scheme 1992 (FPS 1992) you can choose to opt out at any time by completing an opt-out form and sending it to your payroll department.

Your decision to opt out is effective from the date your notice is received by your payroll department and your pensionable service in the scheme will normally end on the first day of the following pay period.

If you opt out within one month of re-joining the FPS 1992 following a transfer of employment from another English fire and rescue authority and have not transferred other pension benefits into the scheme you will be treated as never having re-joined the scheme. If any pension contributions have been deducted from your pay they will be refunded through payroll.

Please be aware that neither the scheme manager and/or Capita can provide advice as to whether it is in your best interest to be in the scheme and would highly recommend that you seek financial advice. You can find details of financial advisers in your area.

If you leave your employment as a firefighter or opt out more than one month after re-joining the scheme, you will become entitled to keep your pension benefits in the FPS 1992 or to transfer them to another pension arrangement. There are restrictions on the types of pension arrangement that you can transfer your benefits to so, please contact the Pensions team if you wish to transfer your benefits to another pension scheme.
