1 What are CLCs?
In West Sussex there are 70 county councillors elected to represent their local communities in areas known as an electoral divisions. County Local Committees (CLCs) are our approach to involving local residents in decision making. They aim to bring county councillors closer to local people and you closer to your County Council.
We have 11 CLCs in action across the county, including two joint area committees in the Arun area, each made up of a number of electoral divisions.
Meetings are open for anyone to attend. They are usually held in the evening and normally last for two hours. Each CLC will meet formally three times a year, at a venue within their area, and it is in these meetings that the Committee's decisions are made.
An agenda will be published a week before the meeting and we aim to publish the proposed decisions, which are subject to a five-day call-in period the day after the meeting.
County Local Committees are designed to ensure that local people can help shape the services provided by the County Council. This includes, amongst other things, schools, libraries, roads and pavements, adults' and children’s services and the Fire & Rescue Service.
Services must address your needs; that’s why your voice is important. Many of the decisions that used to be taken at County Hall are now being made at local level by CLCs and, thanks to the Community Initiative Fund, there is also a limited budget that can be directed to start up local projects, which will benefit your local community.
