Local Plans
Under the former planning system, Local Plans were prepared to
provide a planning framework for minerals and waste. Since changes
to the planning system, the Minerals and Waste Core Strategy is being prepared.
The Core Strategy will, once adopted, replace the
Minerals Local Plan (MLP) and the Waste
Local Plan Revised Deposit Draft (WLP). Until the Core
Strategy is adopted, certain policies from the adopted MLP have
been saved.

Waste Local Plan
In December 2005, we decided to discontinue preparation of the
Waste Local Plan (WLP) as a result of considerable legal and
financial risks into continued preparation of the Plan.
Work undertaken to date on the WLP will now feed into the
preparation of the Minerals and Waste Core Strategy.

Minerals Local Plan
The aims of the Minerals Local Plan 2003 are:
- to set out the County Council's vision, objectives and strategy
for mineral land-use planning in West Sussex;
- to provide a detailed policy framework for determining mineral
planning applications;
- to set out the existing sites and commitments and new site
allocations for minerals development.
Saved policies
Under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, the
policies of the adopted West Sussex Minerals Local Plan were due to
expire on 27 September 2007 unless the Government decided that they
should be saved for a longer period.
Following representations from the County Council, the
Government has decided that 9 of the 64 policies will not be saved
beyond 27 September 2007.
Read the
letter from the Government Office for the South East (PDF, 6
pages, 88KB).
The policies not saved are:
- 23-24 (New Minerals Workings);
- 25 (Reclamation);
- 28 (Oil and Gas);
- 43-46 (Planning Applications);
- 50 (Surveys).
The saved policies will continue to form part of the statutory
'development plan' and provide the local policy framework for
development control decisions until they are replaced by new
documents to be prepared as part of the Minerals and Waste
Development Framework.
