How we can help

Our aim

We aim to help you make the most of your abilities and reduce the need for help from others.Picture of a family

In the majority of complex cases we carry out an assessment of your individual needs in your home and try to make everyday tasks safer and easier for you.

Following your assessment we may give you professional advice, lend you equipment, or recommend specialist adaptations to your home.

What we can offer

  • We can offer you advice and information or even demonstrate techniques to help you manage the everyday tasks.
  • We can prescribe equipment to help make you as independent as possible. Any equipment supplied is loaned free of charge for as long as you require it. However, we do not supply wheelchairs or walking aids, which are supplied by the NHS.
  • We may organise minor adaptations like rails or internal ramps if your disability prevents you getting around your home safely.
  • We may help you plan and organise major building works to your home if it is very difficult for you to live independently, or the layout prevents you getting to important amenities, such as the bathroom or toilet.
  • We can give you appropriate information and discuss options where building works prove impractical, or if you feel you would be better off moving to different accommodation.
  • We can also help people offering care to family or friends. This might include those experiencing difficulties with mobility and movement. For example, we may advise you about handling techniques or special equipment. This can often help enhance the lives of carers and enable people to remain living in their own homes.

Where a visit is not needed

We also operate a fast response service, and can sometimes make items of equipment available when:

  • equipment has been prescribed and ordered by health service occupational therapists to help get you home from hospital; and
  • we feel we may safely meet your request for assistance by authorising small items of equipment for you when you first contact us. This equipment will then be delivered and fitted by one of our technicians, who will make sure you know how to use it.

Disabled facilities grants

Disabled facilities grants are provided by your district and borough councils for a range of home adaptations that help disabled people to live more independently in their own homes.

Disabled facilities grants mainly help to make sure that disabled people can move more freely and safely around their home and use essential facilities. In all cases, the disabled person must be registered as disabled, or be able to be registered.

The amount of grant you get will depend on your income, savings and investments. District or borough council officers use this information to determine how much you can afford to pay towards the cost of the adaptations.

Your local district or borough council will be able to give you more details. The attached leaflet also provides more information.
