Sensory impairment services
Our Sensory Services team
provides services for children and adults who:
- are blind;
- are partially sighted;
- are Deaf, deafened (when a person has lost their hearing
after learning to speak) or hard of hearing; and
- have dual sensory loss (when a person has lost both their
hearing and sight).
Blind and partially sighted
Rehabilitation officers for the visually impaired (ROVIs) will
assess the needs of children and adults with a significant sight
loss. They can also:
- provide equipment and training to help you live independently
in your own home;
- support you if you have difficulty with mobility and
communication; and
- help you to register as partially sighted or blind.
You can find out more about the services we provide for people
with sight loss in our Changing Focus booklet, which is
attached.
Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing
Our Deaf services team members will give advice and provide
services for children and adults with significant hearing loss. For
example, they can:
- support you with assessments of your needs;
- visit you;
- work with other organisations on your behalf;
and
- arrange for specialist equipment, such as text phones or
listening devices, to help you in your home.
They can also arrange communication support, for example,
British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters or lip-speakers, in
appropriate situations.
Dual sensory loss
We work closely with Deafblind UK to provide advice and support
to adults with a dual sensory loss.
Someone will visit you and assess how your combined sight and
hearing loss has affected you and your family.
We will then make arrangements to provide specialist services,
where this is appropriate.
