Getting the right health care
Health services in West Sussex
Health services are provided, regardless
of age, on the basis of clinical need alone, and, if necessary,
through specialist staff.
Health service staff can:
- give you information about your condition and medication;
- discuss different treatments with you;
- discuss the likely results of different treatments;
- listen to, and act upon, your views and concerns; and
- tell a friend or relative about your condition for you, if this
is what you want.

Health advice and
information
You can obtain advice about health care:
- from your family doctor or a member of your primary health care
team, such as the practice nurse or district nurse;
- By viewing the NHS
Choices website
- by looking at the NHS West Sussex 'live
well' web pages;
- by phoning NHS Direct on 0845 4647, or by
using the NHS Direct
online website; and/or
- by talking to your local pharmacist.
For information about health services, please
contact your local patient advice and liaison service (PALS).
PALs provide support to patients, their families and carers and
help to sort out any concerns or queries they may have about their
care. They can also provide information and advice to help patients
get the best from the health service and make access to services as
easy as possible.

Looking to the future
West Sussex residents enjoy a good standard of health and have
relatively long life expectancies. However, the County
Council can always do better! We are ambitious to improve the
health and wellbeing of all people in West Sussex. In particular,
we want to improve the health of individuals and communities who
are behind the county average.
Our services contribute to a healthier West Sussex in a number
of ways. We provide direct help to vulnerable people but we also
contribute indirectly. For example, our work to reduce congestion
promotes healthy transport and helps decrease pollution which
affects people’s health.
Our County Strategy states that we will look at the
contribution we can make to improving health when planning all of
these services. We also have a strong partnership with the NHS and
we will work more closely with them in the future on joint
projects.
In terms of helping particular groups we will target our
resources on the areas and communities in most need. With our
partners in the NHS we will support an increase in access to mental
health services. Our drug and alcohol action teams will help those
suffering the effects of substance misuse.
Access to accurate and up-to-date health information is
available in all West Sussex libraries, and the promotion of health
will be a key priority for that service. Finally, we will work
with partners to promote a healthy lifestyle including within our
own workforce.
