The professional tutor and induction tutor and mentor
Experience has shown that induction is
most effective in those schools that recognise the importance of
the role of the professional tutor, induction tutor and/or mentor
and where strong management structures to support and quality
assure the induction process are set up.
Professional tutors, induction tutors and/or mentors must have the
confidence, resources and management support to take forward their
own professional development, as well as the Newly Qualified
Teacher’s (NQT) induction programme and the professional
development of the school.
NQT induction should not stand alone, but link with other
priorities within the school for example involvement in initial
teacher training, establishment of effective systems of continuing
professional learning and development and a strong recruitment and
retention strategy. This requires an investment of time and
resources to prepare and support professional tutors, induction
tutors and/or mentors to enable a school to manage, maintain and
develop as a learning community.
