Quality assurance
The Appropriate Body, along with the headteacher, is responsible
for Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) training, support, guidance
and supervision during induction.
It is the Appropriate Body that decides whether an
NQT
has met the induction core
standards, on the basis of the headteacher's recommendation.
The Appropriate Body therefore needs to assure itself that
headteachers and governing bodies are aware of and capable of
meeting their responsibilities for monitoring, support and
guidance during an NQT's induction. The Appropriate Body
must also ensure that schools and governing bodies undertake a
rigourous and equitable assessment of NQTs. This will be done
through the quality assurance process.
The quality assurance process entails the monitoring of the
induction procedures in a sample selection of schools and may
include:
- a quality assurance questionnaire for the school;
- a quality assurance questionnaire for the NQT;
or
- focused support and guidance for schools where the need for
additional support has been identified by the Appropriate
Body.
In addition, if the Appropriate Body considers a school is not
providing an appropriate programme, it will act upon this as part
of its quality assurance procedures at the earliest
opportunity.
