Apprenticeships
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a nationally recognised training programme
combining real work with learning and training, both on the job and
at college. As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work
alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. Anyone
living in England, over 16 and who does not have a degree can
apply. The length of the programme ranges from one
to four years, depending on the type of
apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship training framework
comprises:
- functional skills - including maths, English, communication (at
college);
- employment rights and responsibilities (at college);
- technical certificate - knowledge based element (at college and
work); and
- National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) (assessed at work
with college support).
For some apprenticeship frameworks, there are:
- wider functional skills, for example, problem solving; and
- certificates for specific disciplines, for example, food
hygiene and first aid.
There are 3 levels of apprenticeship available:
- Apprenticeship: Level 2 (equivalent to five GCSEs grades
A-C)
- Advanced Apprenticeship: Level 3 (equivalent to two
A-Levels)
- Higher Apprenticeship: Level 4 (and may involve a foundation
degree)
Level 4 is more akin with someone who will be working at a
more complex level or in a supervisory capacity. For entry to
this level attainment of 2 A- Levels or equivalent would be
required.

Our commitment to apprenticeships
As an organisation,
WSCC
recognises the value
apprenticeships can bring and had a commitment to employ 200
apprentices by 31 March 2011. This initiative has spearheaded the
inclusion of apprentices amongst the organisation's workforce and
we are continuing to recruit apprentices as part of our overall
workforce.
Apprenticeships bring many benefits:
- earning a salary;
- getting paid holidays;
- receiving training;
- gaining qualifications; and
- learning job-specific skills.
We are working in partnership with 4 local colleges who run
apprenticeship schemes in the area:
- Central Sussex College (North Downs)
- Chichester College
- Highbury College (Portsmouth)
- Northbrook College (Worthing)
Each college has information on the apprenticeships they deliver on
their websites.
All apprentices recruited by the County Council who
undertake an apprenticeship framework will be employed on a
'contract for training' and will receive the evaluated pay and
terms and conditions relevant for the role. An apprentice
needs to work for a minimum of 30 hours a week.
