Business advice

Legislation can be complicated and it isn’t always easy to know what is applicable to your business and what you need to do to comply.

West Sussex Trading Standards offer a tailored business advice service to West Sussex based businesses. Trained officers can answer questions from all sizes of business from small home producers to national companies.

Not only can we give advice on specific enquires but we can also provide information and guidance on other relevant Trading Standards legislation that may be applicable to your business.

It is the responsibility of every business to comply with the full range of consumer protection legislation applicable to them. Our officers can give you the guidance, information or simply the reassurance that you need.

Advice is available on a wide range of Trading Standards legislation and is open to any business based in West Sussex. Just some of the areas we can offer advice and support on include:

  • safety of consumer products;
  • sale of age restricted products;
  • legal requirements for websites and sales over the internet;
  • food labelling; and
  • the rights of your customers.


Advice is available in units of just one hour, as outlined below.

Business advice - Conditions and charges

Advice is available to businesses from trained officers within the West Sussex Trading Standards Service, subject to the following conditions and charges*:

  • The business must be based in West Sussex.

  • The business will be required to register with the service at an initial cost of £55 plus VAT (£66 including VAT). This will give the business up to one hour of officer time on that enquiry. Outstanding time cannot be carried forward for future advice unless it relates to an ongoing matter.

  • If the matter is to take more than one hour to deal with, the officer will give the business an estimate of the time needed to answer their query. Each hour (or part thereof) of officer time in addition to the initial registration will be charged at £55 plus VAT (£66 including VAT).

  • Future requests for advice following initial registration will be charged in units of one hour, or part thereof (currently £55 plus VAT, £66 including VAT per hour). The minimum charge will be one hour.

  • All advice given to the business will be confirmed in writing, or if preferred by email.

  • Once agreed, payment will be requested before work takes place and advice is given. The officer dealing with the enquiry will be able to take payments over the phone using most credit or debit cards. We regret we are unable to accept payment in cash or by cheque.
