Ways of Responding Through Health (WORTH)
What WORTH does
WORTH (Ways of responding through health), is an Independent
Domestic Violence Advisory (IDVA) Service that identifies, assesses
and assists people who have been affected by domestic abuse.
WORTH IDVA Services has been developed and delivered by the West
Sussex Crime and Disorder Partners since January 2004. It is
acknowledged as an essential core service in addressing crime,
increasing safety and managing the risk of high-risk clients and
their children. WORTH IDVA Services now sits within the
Safeguarding Unit of West Sussex County Council’s Public Health
Directorate.
WORTH is an expanding service; in the first year of operation we
received 300 referrals compared to the 1,600 referrals we received
in 2010.
A high proportion of people who are experiencing domestic abuse
present at A&E departments. Women who are murdered by their
partners have attended A&E for treatment for their injuries up
to 30 times on average. WORTH are health-based to provide an easy
access point for victims. Between 2009-2011 there were 5 homicides
in West Sussex as a result of domestic abuse incidents.
