Graffiti

GraffitiGraffiti is seen as criminal damage in the eyes of the law, and carries a maximum custodial sentence of 10 years for people over 18 years old. It can have a big impact on the way people perceive their neighbourhoods, and increases the fear of crime, particularly amongst more vulnerable groups. It can trigger other anti-social behaviour in an area, and undermine resident’s pride of a community.

To tackle this issue effectively, graffiti needs to be removed rapidly, and evidence shows that if this is done persistently, it is far less likely to come back. In West Sussex, the County Council supports its district and borough partners to remove all graffiti from public view at no cost to individual property owners.

Reporting graffiti

Who to contact

Within West Sussex there is now a graffiti removal service in operation across the whole area. All of these services are partnership funded to remove all graffiti from public view, wherever it is practicable to do so. (It is recognised that it will not be possible to remove some instances due to access or safety constraints, for example, offences on railway land.) These services aim to remove all graffiti within a maximum time period of 5 working days, or one working day for offensive incidents, and in the majority of cases these services operate at no cost to the landowner.

In order to maximise the benefits of these services, please report any graffiti using the appropriate contact details listed below:
