Care, storage and preservation of documents

Advice on the conservation and preservation of documents and other items at the Record Office.

The archives we preserve at the Record Office can range from a sheet of 13th century paper to a 16th century book, or a modern Ordnance Survey map to a wartime identification tag.

Archive conservators can treat, and advise on, a wide variety of materials and records, such as paper, parchment, books, seals, maps and plans. More recently, the preservation of digital media has been added to this list.

Advice on the care, storage and preservation of your personal papers

Here at the Record Office we can offer free advice on the best way to look after and store your precious documents.

If you damage a document or book at home, phone us or bring it in straight away so we can advise on the best way to treat it.

We are also able to provide a service conserving and preserving your documents. Please contact our Senior Conservator at the Record Office, for more information and costs.
