Books on Prescription

Books on Prescription (BoP) is a scheme that was first developed in Cardiff in 2003 and is now established in many places in the UK. West Sussex Library Service is working in partnership with NHS West Sussex to provide BoP throughout the county in West Sussex.

Books on Prescription imageHow does it work?

GPs and other health professionals have a list (see Related Documents) of 60 approved books on mental health issues such as anger, depression, anxiety, stress, and so on. They can 'prescribe' a book to a patient using a specially produced prescription pad. The patient takes the prescription to the library and the staff will help them find the book. If the book is not immediately available, it can be requested free of charge. There is a set of books in each library in West Sussex.

Part of the prescription is an evaluation form. Library staff will give this back to the patient when they hand in the prescription. The evaluation form can then be returned with the book.

You need to be a member of the library to borrow the book. Anyone who is not a member can join using the prescription as proof of identity.

Library staff will keep all details strictly confidential.

For details of the books that can be prescribed please see Related Documents.
