Sussex Border Path
A linear walk of 150 miles (240 km). Starting at Thorney
Island and ending at Rye in East Sussex, this beautiful and
surprisingly remote route follows the inland (Hampshire, Surrey and
Kent) borders of Sussex.
Start/finish
Thorney Island, near Emsworth (grid ref SU753053) and ends in
Rye in East Sussex (grid ref TQ918205).
For use by
For use by walkers. Not always waymarked, the route can be
adventurous and challenging.
Terrain
Constantly changing views, covering varied terrain. The route
commences with a 9 mile circuit of Thorney Island. The South Downs
are designated as a National Park. There are superb views to the
north across the Weald and south to the Isle of Wight. There are
some moderately steep slopes but the path mostly runs on farm
tracks across rolling open country.
Average time to complete
People who are reasonably fit can do 12-15 miles (20 km) per
day. At this pace it takes about 12 days to walk the whole route.
Allow for an extra couple of miles (3 km) or so each day to get to
and from accommodation and to visit the many interesting features
along the route.
Highlights
Constantly changing views. Discover fine buildings including
Norman and Saxon churches, half-timbered houses, windmills and
converted oasts and explore charming villages and pubs.

The official route guide, The Sussex Border Path by John Allen
ISBN 1-85058-677-2 covers the whole route and is designed to enable
the route to be tackled as a series of day walks. Although now out
of print, it is still available at some libraries and may be found
in second hand book shops.
