Connect2 - Shoreham Harbour bridge replacement
Introduction
The Connect2 Shoreham Harbour Bridge
Replacement project is one of 79 Connect2 schemes nationally. The
project aims to replace the existing footbridge spanning Shoreham
Harbour from Shoreham Town Centre to Shoreham Beach.
The existing bridge was built in the 1920s and is now nearing
the end of its working life. The new bridge will be wider,
facilitating use by both pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition to a new bridge the project aims to provide an
improved route for pedestrians and cyclists from Shoreham Beach
through the Town Centre to Shoreham-by-Sea railway
station. This route will link up with National Cycle Network:
Route 2 (NCN2) improving cycling facilities for local people and
visitors to Shoreham alike.
WSCC will be working in partnership with the UK’s largest
sustainable transport charity Sustrans. Sustrans are
contributing £770,000, on behalf of the Big Lottery Fund (BLF),
toward the expected project cost of £5.85 million. This is thanks
to the outstanding support of local people and Adur District
Council during the Peoples Million Vote in 2007.
It is expected that the new bridge will be open toward the end
of 2012.
