Parking enforcement

We are responsible for controlling parking on the highway. This currently covers the cost of enforcement of on-street parking regulations by the Districts and Borough councils.

This section explains Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE), what the police's remaining involvement is, and how to report abandoned vehicles.

The County Council is responsible for managing on-street parking in West Sussex. Parking charges are one way in which the limited parking capacity is shared out.

On-street parking is usually designated for short stays, with longer durations encouraged to take place in off-street Car parks. On-street parking charges are therefore usually set at higher levels than those of equivalent off-street locations.

For on-street charges please refer to related links.

For off-street parking charges please refer to the relevant District or Borough Council.

  • Changes in the law mean that councils can apply to central government to take over the enforcement of most on-street parking controls from the police.

  • The county council does not clamp or remove vehicles from the highway. Find out who is responsible for what actions.
