Record Office Jubilee Events
Film Evening – Alan Readman, County
archivist
County Archivist Alan Readman will be hosting a film evening at
the Record Office on 30 May (7.00pm). Rare footage of King George
V’s visit to Bognor in 1929 and the celebrations in Chichester of
his Silver Jubilee in 1935 will be shown along with local film from
the time of our present Queen’s Coronation in 1953 and Silver
Jubilee in 1977. The Record Office has fascinating footage of these
events, some of it in colour, capturing the decorated streets,
spectacular floats and gala parades throughout the county. Tickets,
booked in advance, are £5.00.
Photographs from the archives will be on display.
Encouraging communities to add to the County Archive –
Susan Millard, Archivist and Nichola Court, Searchroom
Archivist.
West Sussex Record Office holds a treasure trove of documents
relating to the celebrations, which have marked many of our modern
monarchs’ jubilees and coronations, from the Golden Jubilee of
Queen Victoria to our present Queen’s more recent Golden
Jubilee.
The Record Office would love to add to their archive of memories
and photographs of previous events, from King George V’s Silver
Jubilee in 1935 to Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.
The aim is to build up an archive that illustrates how Jubilees
and Coronations have been celebrated throughout the County in the
past. If you have anything you would like to share with current and
future generations, the Record Office would be delighted to hear
from you. They are happy to scan your original photographs for
their digital archive and record your memories to add to their oral
history archive!
Photograph competition – Jubilee 2012 – Susan Millard,
Archivist and Nichola Court, Searchroom
Archivist.
It is fascinating to look back at the various celebrations which
have taken place locally, but the Record Office needs your help to
ensure that future generations can do the same for the festivities
which will take place this year.
They are running a competition to find the best photograph of
this year’s Jubilee festivities. Submit hard copies of your photos
to the address below or email to records.office@westsussex.gov.uk.
Include details of the event and the photographer’s name and
contact details with your entry. Closing date for the competition
is 30 June 2012, and the best entries will be put on display.
Elizabeth I’s Chichester: an historic walk round the
