Tithe Map project
The idea for a West Sussex Record Office Tithe Map project
started in 1996, when Record Office staff began to look for a
solution to preventing the ongoing deterioration in the condition
of the tithe maps.
A successful bid was made to the Heritage Lottery Fund and with
extra contributions also made from West Sussex Archive Society and
The Golden Trust. The Tithe Maps project was launched in 2007.
During the first stage of the project, Icam Archive Systems
copied the maps and provided the software that would enable the
maps to be viewed on a computer in the Record
Office searchroom.
Nearly 100 volunteers were recruited to transcribe 185
apportionments onto spreadsheets, which were then added to the
computer so that they could be looked at alongside the maps.
The maps can now be viewed at several libraries around the
county and are available for purchase on cd.
We are grateful to all the volunteers who took part in the
project. They gave freely of their time to make it successful and
added huge value to the final result.
