Collections and archives

The West Sussex Record Office holds records from a variety of sources. See the Record Office holdings page for details, or search online.

  • The archive seeks to locate, collect, preserve and promote moving images made in or relating to the South East of England. There are now over 9,000 items in the archive including newsreels, corporate documentaries, promotional material and feature films.
 
  • The West Sussex Record Office archives consist of documents, photographs, audio-visual records and prints that cover the history of the Regiment from 1701 to 1966.
 
 
  • The Record Office holds local government records of West Sussex County Council and other predecessor authorities including Urban and Rural District Councils, Chichester City Council, Boards of Health, School Boards and the West Sussex Constabulary.
 
 
  • The Buckle Papers are likely to be of considerable interest to students of British naval history in the 18th and 19th centuries. They include the papers of several high-ranking naval officers of the most famous naval campaigns in British history.
 
  • West Sussex Record Office is privileged to have custody of a substantial part of the archives of Richard Cobden, the nineteenth century politician and statesman, who is remembered for his contribution to the the Anglo-French Commercial treaty of 1860.
 
  • The Goodwood Archives are the papers of the Dukes of Richmond and Gordon and their estate centred on Goodwood near Chichester.
 
  • The Petworth House Archives form the largest private collection under the care of West Sussex Record Office. The house and the estate have been in continuous ownership for six hundred years, though the majority of the archives date from the late 16th century.
 
  • This collection of Blunt's correspondence covers the period 1855-1922. It reflects the many facets of a gifted, controversial maverick. He is best remembered as a poet but his interests and activities extended far beyond the literary world.
 
  • The Victoria History of Sussex is part of the national series called the Victoria County History (V.C.H.), planned around the time of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 to create a comprehensive encyclopaedia of English local history.
