History of West Sussex
We work with local authorities, statutory undertakers, landowners, farmers and national agencies to promote understanding of the historic environment and to implement measures to mitigate damaging effects of construction, development and land management.
Archaeology is about understanding past human societies, and their environment. Find out how West Sussex County Council's archaeology team are working to preserve the county's archaeological heritage.
West Sussex has a rich and varied heritage. Since the early 1970s, we have maintained a database of all known archaeological sites and finds, the Historic Environment Record.
We have run an award scheme, promoting and celebrating the construction and restoration of buildings and open spaces throughout the County since 1978.
