West Sussex Local Economic Assessment

The Local Economic Assessment (LEA)

The Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009, which came into effect on 1 April 2010, places a statutory duty on upper tier and unitary authorities to prepare a Local Economic Assessment (LEA).

Statutory guidance on LEAs, released in April 2010 and setting out what the new duty is intended to achieve and how assessments should be taken forward was subsequently withdrawn and there are no proposals to replace it. This gives local authorities greater flexibility over how they take forward their assessments.

The aim of the LEA is to provide an examination of the economic, social and environment components that affect the county’s economic performance. A draft West Sussex LEA, building on data and information the County Council already uses, has been undertaken.

The broad themes addressed in the West Sussex LEA are:

  • business and enterprise
  • people and communities
  • sustainable economic growth
  • transport provision and other infrastructure
  • economic competitiveness.

Draft version of the LEA

The draft version of the LEA will be available shortly.

Once the draft version of the LEA is available, we intend to review and update the data included in the West Sussex LEA. The Census 2011 data will prove to be a comprehensive data source that will help to review the LEA in the future. It is intended that the final report will provide a robust evidence base for use by our many partners who include public sector bodies and businesses.
