School Travel Planning

A School Travel Plan (STP) should propose a package of measures that encourage a shift away from car use towards safe, sustainable modes of travel for the journey to and from school.  It should act as an umbrella for all that the school is doing to promote safe, sustainable travel and is a live, working document that is based on consultation with the whole school community.  A School Travel Plan includes concerns about safety and health, and suggests ways to make improvements.

All schools are being encouraged to develop a School Travel Plan as it is an effective tool in bringing about change in school travel patterns.  West Sussex County Council has a target that reflects national policy to have a School Travel Plan in place at every school in West Sussex by 2010.  There is currently a dedicated team of School Travel Advisers covering the whole of West Sussex to guide schools through effective initiatives to encourage a shift away from car use to more sustainable modes of travel.

Our School Travel Plan Information Pack provides a step-by-step guide to developing your School Travel Plan.  Information is also provided on how to carry out a travel survey at your school.
