Safer Routes to School - Engineering Schemes

Once a school travel plan has been awarded a travel mark award, a school will automatically be considered for a safer routes to school project, if the school travel plan requests highway improvements in addition to education initiatives.

A safer routes to school project could for example involve improvements to pedestrian or cycling infrastructure, or safety improvements on the roads around a school.  Some examples of previous safer routes to school projects are available on these pages.

School travel plans requesting highway improvements will be assessed using set criteria that rank all schools requesting improvements.  Safer routes to school schemes will be chosen on the basis of these criteria and current budgetary constraints.

If you would like further information about safer routes to school projects then please contact the Safer Routes to School Team.
