West Sussex County Council: 5. Maintenance of the Public Rights of Way Network

Landowners and the County Council as the highway authority have shared responsibility for the maintenance of the public rights of way network.

In the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the day-to-day management of the network is carried out by the South Downs Joint Committee as agent of the County Council.

The following page gives details of the routine inspection and maintenance programme outside the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as information about seasonal maintenance and larger projects carried out on the network.
