The Low Weald

The Low Weald is the low-lying clay landscape found between the chalk of the South Downs, the higher sandstone areas of the Surrey Hills and the High Weald to the north and east.

The Low Weald is a landscape of oak, hazel and hornbeam coppice woodlands and shaws (narrow strips of woodland) between an intricate network of pastures. It is thought that shaws are the remnants of the ancient 'wild wood' left un-touched when farmers created the fields thousands of years ago.
