Public Rights of Way

The county of West Sussex is predominantly rural in nature covering an area of some 198,701 hectares (491,000 acres) with a population of over 700,000. It is one of the most heavily wooded counties in the country and the quality of its countryside is such that over half of the county is designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, namely Chichester Harbour, the Sussex Downs and the High Weald.

There are approximately 4,035km (2,507 miles) of public rights of way - footpaths, bridleways, restricted byways and byways open to all traffic (BOATs). The public rights of way network enables everyone to experience and enjoy the countryside and provides an alternative to pavements in more urban areas.
