Government Urged: 'Back us over commercial waste'

County Council pledges to tackle the Government over commercial waste

West Sussex County Council is an innovator in recycling and resource management solutions for waste disposal throughout the County. In 2004, the Recycling and Waste Handling Contract was let to Viridor Waste Management Ltd. This contract is known as Reclaim West Sussex. Since this time, the recycling rate in West Sussex has increased from 22% to 37.8%. This is a tremendous achievement!

In 2009, West Sussex County Council is due to let the Materials Resource Management Contract. This will deal with 'black bag' rubbish that is not currently recycled or composted through the Reclaim contract and is presently being land filled. Landfill is no longer considered a sustainable option for waste disposal due to valuable resources being lost and resulting in the use of unnecessary raw materials and manufacturing processes.

Changing the way we manage our recycling and rubbish, which is a journey from Rubbish to Resource, will make an important contribution to improving the quality of life in West Sussex.
