Heritage, Wildlife and Landscape
The West Sussex environment is special, whether it is the geology and soils, landform, climate, water, air or heritage. It provides raw materials, livelihood, culture and recreation. It is continually changing either through natural processes, human impact or a combination of both, and while its capacity to adapt is high, it is not infinite.
Heritage, wildlife and landscape includes:
- heritage - the results of human activity and culture over time, buildings above ground and associated remains below ground, the results of archaeological excavations, finds and records
- wildlife - plants, animals, insects and where they live (habitats) - now often referred to as Biodiversity or the variety of life
- landscape - what we see as the results of interaction of the weather, climate, and human activity on water, geology, soils, air and biodiversity.
West Sussex County Council is working, with others, to improve the environment of West Sussex - by seeking ways to manage the pressures and changes impacting on our environment and enabling communities to benefit from it, whilst enhancing and maintaining its quality - now and in the future.
