Index of Multiple Deprivation
Although the vast majority of people enjoy a relatively high quality of life in West Sussex, there are nevertheless pockets of deprivation across the County. The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) is a survey undertaken by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and it illustrates the location of these pockets and the relative severity of the deprivation experienced by different communities. Deprivation is measured by data collected from each of the following topic areas known as domains.
Income
Employment
Health and Disablity
Education, skills and training
Barriers to Housing and Services
Crime
Living Environment
The survey was undertaken by the ODPM and published in 2004. Quote from the ODPM:
The IMD is a measure of multiple deprivation at the small area level. The model of multiple deprivation which underpins the IMD 2004 is based on the idea of distinct dimensions of deprivation which can be recognised and measured separately. These are experienced by individuals living in an area. People may be counted as deprived in one or more of the domains depending on the number of types of deprivation that they experience. The overall IMD is conceptualised as a weighted area level aggregation of these specific dimensions of deprivation.
