Rubbish from in and around Haywards Heath that cannot be recycled could end up as eco-friendly fuel and provide heating for homes and businesses, the next public meeting of Central Mid Sussex County Local Committee will hear.

A presentation on the new billion pound state-of-the-art plant West Sussex County Council unveiled last September is one of the headline topics at the meeting, which is being held at Balcombe Victory Hall, Stockcroft Road, Balcombe, Haywards Heath, RH17 6HP at 7pm on Tuesday March 31.

The new plant, which will be in Brookhurst Wood, near Horsham, will have the potential to:

• Turn up to 320,000 tonnes of waste into a resource.
• Save the County £300 million over its lifetime.

John de Mierre, Committee Chairman, said: “This is a major step in fulfilling the promise that by working in partnership, West Sussex local authorities will reduce landfill by being leaders in waste prevention and recycling and by turning rubbish into resources.”

The facility, which will be built and operated by Biffa could be operational as early as 2011.
