Eco-friendly fuel to provide heating for homes and businesses, will be made from rubbish that cannot be recycled, the next public meeting of Joint Eastern Arun Area Committee (JEAAC) will hear.

A presentation on the new billion pound state-of-the-art plant West Sussex County Council unveiled last September is one of the headline topics at the meeting, which is being held at Littlehampton Town Hall, Millennium Chamber, Manor House, Church Street (BN17 5EW), on Tuesday April 7.

The meeting will hear that working as a partnership, West Sussex local authorities will reduce landfill by being leaders in waste prevention and recycling and by using the remaining rubbish as a resource.

This will be achieved with the new plant, which will be built and operated by Biffa, and may be running as early as winter 2011. It will be in Brookhurst Wood, near Horsham, and have the potential to turn up to 320,000 tonnes of waste into a resource.

Other items on the agenda include:

• Questions from the public
• A verbal update on the A259 Action Sub Group
• Traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures in Littlehampton and Rustington
• Equipment for child play areas
• An update on policing issues in the area
• Decisions on grant applications

Peter Evans, Chairman of JEAAC’s West Sussex council members, said: “The new recycling plant will be very effective in reducing landfill across the county, and put the materials being processed to good use.

“The meeting will also keep the residents of Eastern Arun informed about the issues that matter the most to them about their community.”

The meeting is open to the public from 7pm.
