The Government was urged to support the ongoing drive in West Sussex to tackle commercial waste that cannot yet be recycled at a seminar on waste management.

The call was made by Derek Whittington, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, at a meeting that brought together representatives from each of the District and Boroughs and from the private waste industry.

The meeting was held as part of Derek’s pledge to tackle commercial waste issues.

He said: “Already the County Council works in partnership with the District and Boroughs to lead an award winning business waste recycling scheme.

“We also support the West Sussex Sustainable Business Partnership in working with businesses to reduce the amount of waste they produce.

“We are now looking to Government to support us as we move forward to develop long term solutions for the elements of commercial waste that are not yet recyclable.

“These solutions will focus on using the remaining waste as a resource, which is what we will soon be doing with all our non-recycled household waste.”

A Keynote speaker at the meeting was Chindarat Taylor, Director for Pathway to Zero Waste, which aims to deliver resource efficiencies and more sustainable management of waste in the South East region.

She reiterated the need for stronger partnership working between the private and public sector, an approach strongly supported by Derek.

The presentations sparked a lively debate and positive contributions from both the private and public sector and a general commitment to a more strategic approach to the management of commercial and industrial waste in West Sussex
