A PLEDGE to put further pressure on the Government to introduce legislation to restrict the amount of commercial waste that
can go to landfill has been made by Derek Whittington, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning. He
is supported by Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel and South Down.
The undertaking was made at a meeting Derek requested with the Zero Landfill Group, a joint group committed to reducing landfill within West Sussex.
Derek said: “Although we have no statutory duty to deal with commercial waste, we are doing what we can to ensure there is adequate opportunity for businesses to make more sustainable choices regarding their waste.”
Frank Wilkinson, Deputy Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning with responsibility for waste and recycling, who also attended the meeting, said: “Already we have in place an award winning commercial waste recycling scheme in partnership with the Boroughs and Districts.
“We are now looking to complement this scheme with long term solutions for the elements of commercial waste that are not yet recyclable.
“These solutions will focus on using the remaining waste as a resource, which is what we will soon be doing with all our non recycled household waste.”
