Temporary site’s successful opening

Date: Jun 23, 2008

Press Release Number: PR2254

A temporary weekend site where residents can dump household rubbish was successfully opened in Crawley on Saturday and Sunday (June 21 and June 22).

The site, which is in Metcalfe Way, next to the prestige facility that was severely damaged by fire on Monday June 9, operated without a hitch on both days.

Henry Smith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “The successful opening of this temporary site reflects the commitment and expertise of the County Council’s Waste Team and our operators Viridor.

“They are to be congratulated for getting an alternative site up and running less than a fortnight after the fire, so ensuring residents have a basic and safe facility.”

The temporary site – which is for cars and vans only – operates on Saturdays and Sundays between 9am and 3pm. It is for general household waste only and is not able to recycle.

The site is not able to accept:

· Fridges and freezers.
· TVs.
· Electrical goods.
· Fluorescent tubes.
· Chemicals.
· Batteries.
· Oil.
· Gas bottles.
· Tyres.

Henry, who represents Pound Hill, Worth and Maidenbower Electoral Division, added: “We will now be looking to build upon this success. We will be continually monitoring the service with a view to the possible inclusion of recycling and extending the range of materials it can accept.”

“At the same time we shall be continuing to inspect the damaged Household Waste Recycling Site, with a view to re-opening it in six months to a year’s time, depending on the condition of the structure.”

Full Household Waste Recycling Site facilities continue to be available at Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Horsham
