Temporary recycling site to open Crawley
Date: Jun 16, 2008
Press Release Number: PR2241
Press Release
A temporary weekend site where residents can dump household rubbish will open in Crawley this Saturday (June 21) – less than
a fortnight after a major blaze severely damaged the borough’s prestige facility in Metcalfe Way.
It will be next door to the current site and be clearly signposted.
At first, the temporary site will only operate on Saturdays and Sundays between 9am and 3pm and offer a limited service. It will not be able to recycle and will be for cars and vans only.
However, Henry Smith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “It will provide residents with a basic and safe facility and we will be continually monitoring the service with a view to extending the range of materials it can accept.
“At the same time, we shall be continuing to inspect the damaged Household Waste Recycling Site, with a view to re-opening it in six months to a year’s time, depending on the condition of the structure.”
The temporary site will be for general household waste only. It will not be able to accept:
· Fridges and freezers.
· TVs.
· Electrical goods.
· Fluorescent tubes.
· Chemicals.
· Batteries.
· Oil.
· Gas bottles.
· Tyres.
Henry, who represents Pound Hill, Worth and Maidenbower Electoral Division, added: “I would like to congratulate the County Council’s Waste Team and our operators Viridor for acting so swiftly and getting an alternative up and running within such a short time.”
Full Household Waste Recycling Site facilities continue to be available at Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Horsham
