Press Release

It’s in the bag at West Sussex County Council’s Littlehampton Household Waste Recycling Site in Toddington Road … genuine organic compost that comes from West Sussex garden waste and has been processed in the county. Called Reclaim Organic Soil Conditioner, it cost £4 a bag or three for £10.

John de Mierre, County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, who is pictured below, said: “This is an excellent example of how waste taken to our network of Household Waste Recycling Sites can be turned into a useable product. In this case one that will enrich your garden with an organic product that is local in every sense of the term.

“It also shows how recycling can very effectively ‘close the loop’.

“This is because the green waste from your garden can be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Site or collected from your kerbside. It then goes to a local composting plant, where it is processed and bagged and ready for sale at the Household Waste Recycling Site.

“The loop is closed when Reclaim Organic Soil Conditioner is spread on the garden.

“So far, 56,000 tonnes of green waste from gardens in West Sussex has been processed into Reclaim Organic Soil Conditioner to be sold at selected Household Waste Recycling Sites in the county.”

John also reminded gardeners about the value of producing their own compost.

He said: “It’s easy to do. It takes little effort. It doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is. And what’s more – we’ve made it easy on your pocket.

“We’ve signed a deal with WRAP, the nationwide initiative to boost recycling, to offer West Sussex residents top quality composters at rock bottom prices. You can buy a home composter from as little £10 (usual price - £40) and have it delivered free to your door.”
