Carer's Assessment

Are you a carer?

Carers look after family, partners or friends in need of help because they are ill, frail or have a disability. The care they provide is unpaid. (Carers UK)

As a carer you are entitled to an assessment if you provide, or intend to provide, regular and substantial amounts of care. The care you provide must be essential for the person's safety, basic life needs and quality of life. It must also enable them to continue living at home.

You can have a carer’s assessment when:

  • the person you care for completes an assessment
  • we are reviewing the care needs of the person you look after
  • the circumstances of either you or the person you care for change and you ask to be re-assessed
  • you are providing regular and substantial care to someone and the person refuses help. If they refuse an assessment you are still entitled to an assessment in your own right
