Signs for Cyclists

Cycle routes are principally indicated by signs and markings. They may be either on the carriageway (cycle lanes); on footways either shared with or segregated from pedestrians (cycle tracks), or specially designated cycle paths. It is important that all cycle routes have clear and correct signing, both for the cyclist and for all other users. The type of signing used will depend on the legal categorisation of the route in question.

Signs cyclist should be familiar with:

Remember, the shape and colour of the sign indicates the type of message being relayed.

  • Signs with red circles are mostly prohibitive and give orders.
  • Triangular signs are mostly warnings.
  • Information signs are rectangular

No Cycling

Cycle Route Ahead (Sign to warn motorists)

White cycle symbol may be painted in the road or track to help identify the route

Pedal cycles and buses only

Off road cycle track. All other vehicles prohibited including mopeds

Recommended cycle route on roads

Segregated cycle track and pedestrian route ahead

National cycle route (Straight on at junction ahead - arrow direction may vary)

Start of pedal cycle and bus lane

With-flow bus lane ahead, which pedal cycles and taxi's may also use
