Travelwise Week 2008
TRAVELWISE is a national campaign that aims to raise awareness of the problems caused by unnecessary car use, and the benefits of using healthier and more sustainable modes of transport.
Throughout TRAVELWISE Week (22nd-26th September 2008) we asked commuters, parents and pupils to do their bit to help reduce traffic congestion and pollution in West Sussex. Everyone who pledged to use sustainable modes of transport for peak-hour journeys was entered into a prize draw to win a £150 gift voucher.
201 people rose to our week-long challenge, and as a result 360 car journeys and over a tonne of carbon dioxide were saved! 400 trees would have to be planted to achieve the same impact!
In total 3,870 single occupant car miles were replaced using forms of transport that are better for the environment. On average each car driver saved over 33kg of harmful carbon dioxide during the week by switching to environmentally friendlier and healthier modes.
Well done to everyone who took part in our TRAVELWISE Week challenge, and special congratulations to Kerry Exley who is our £150 prize draw winner! Kerry used a combination of public transport and car sharing for her journeys to work during the week.
