West Sussex County Council: Business Travelwise

Business TravelWise is an initiative run by West Sussex County Council which aims to reduce the number of cars used for commuting and for work journeys.  A Business TravelWise pack has been developed which offers advice on steps that can be taken to reduce car use together with the benefits to the organsiation.

With the continual growth in road traffic we all face increased congestion and pollution. But at the same time businesses face a loss of productivity and loss of time.

We want to show that by finding alternatives to car use, they are not only helping the environment but there are often benefits for their business too.

Encouraging staff to cycle to work, for example, could reduce the amount of space needed for car parking, will improve employees' health and reduce the number of sick days.

Teleworking could be an option for some staff - reducing office space, improving productivity and reducing business mileage.

Clearly, building more roads is no longer the only acceptable solution and the information we have compiled is designed to help businesses make a contribution to the overall solution.  No single action can in itself solve the problems we face, but taken together lots of individual activities can have a worthwhile effect.
