Parish Registers On Microfiche
The following list gives the details of all the parish registers available on microfiche at the West Sussex Record Office.
They can be consulted at the office, and copies can also be purchased. We hold fiche for approximately 85% of the ancient
parishes of West Sussex. They normally commence with the earliest surviving register (which often dates back to the 16th or
17th century) and end at approximately 1900.
We should warn anyone intending to buy fiche copies of the earlier
registers (for the period prior to 1660) that they can be extremely difficult to read. The handwriting itself is completely
different from modern script, as the illustration shows; while the parchment on which the entries were written is often discoloured
or damaged by age.
Please note that we hold originals or other versions of parish registers which are not yet available on fiche; and these can be consulted in our Searchroom. We have coverage (in the form of originals, Bishops Transcripts, microfilm or modern transcripts) for all West and East Sussex parishes, usually from the 16th or 17th century and often well into the 20th.
Copies of Parish Registers can be purchased at £2.50 per fiche. (Minimum order £10:00)
