The Downs Link/Coastal Link
  • A multi-use path joining the North Downs Way with the South Downs Way and beyond towards the coast at Shoreham. The route is linear and is 37 miles (59 km) in length.
Start /Finish
  • St Martha’s Hill near Guildford, Surrey (Grid reference: TQ 031 483)
  • Shoreham (Grid reference: TQ 207 059).
For use by
  • Walkers, horse riders and cyclists.
Nearest Towns
  • Guilford, Cranleigh, Horsham, Southwater, Henfield, Steyning, Shoreham.
Terrain
  • Following the routes of two former railway lines, the path is fairly level, although there are some undulating sections.
Average time to complete
  • A couple of days for walkers, or a full day’s ride.
Highlights
  • Landscape, views, wildlife. St. Martha’s Hill, Wey and Arun Canal, Baynard’s Station (restored, but please note that this is a private residence and not open to the public), Southwater Country Park, Steyning Church and 15th century houses, Bramber Castle, River Adur, Shoreham Tollbridge.

Other useful information
  • The route guide splits the route into sections of between 4 miles and 7 miles (6km and 11km) accessible by public transport or car.
  • Established in 1984, the route provides an invaluable green corridor. This route is managed by West Sussex County Council, Surrey County Council and Waverley Borough Council.
