Sussex Churches - Open in West Sussex

Introduction
Introduction
This is a selection of the most beautiful and interesting churches to visit in West Sussex - all of which are open on a regular basis. The majority are Grade I Listed buildings, but all have a history which is unique to the community and the people who care for them. Some are over 1,000 years old, whereas others date from more modern times. The fact that they are here for visitors to enjoy is a great testimony to the devotion of faithful people through the ages and to the present congregation and those who minister to them.
If you are coming a long distance, we recommend that you telephone in advance to ensure that the church is open at the time of your visit. It may be closed for repairs, a wedding, a funeral or another meeting or event.
If you are tracing your family tree or searching for a particular grave, it is essential that you telephone first. In the Church of England, an appointment must be made in advance for searching the parish registers. The current fee is £15.00 for the first hour and £12.00 for each additional hour. Many older registers are deposited at the County Record Office in Chichester. This office also keeps some lists of monumental inscriptions and grave charts. The telephone number is 01243 753600. Although some churches have a map of graves available for visitors, this is not usually the case.
This leaflet has been produced by West Sussex County Council, Sacred Sussex (the multi-faith tourism initiative of the
Diocese of Chichester) and The Open Churches Trust, working in partnership.
